Events and Speakers A. Fundraiser: SMOOTHIES FOR THE SOUL – August 23rd B. CareLink Information Session – September 12th C. International Education Week (CMHE)- Nov 7th – 11th D. Eva Kor – Survivor of Auschwitz - Research Ethics Roundup: “Surviving the Angel of Death” - Nov 8th - World AIDS Day – December 1st E. Potential Speakers/Topics to look out for: - Samantha Nutt – War Child Canada - Sex Trafficking - Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) - Colonias - Refugee Issues MS1 Positions: A. MS I Liaison - Make announcements, send emails, help with scheduling/planning events B. Newsletter/Blogger - Assist in putting together the monthly newsletter and writing regular blog entries on health and human rights topics C. Advocacy Liaison - Work with the advocacy chairs on developing and establishing advocacy work related to sex trafficking D. San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic Liaison - Help assist with the behind-the-scenes work of our bi-monthly clinic E. E-mail Neelima by 8/22 if you are interested! - Tell us what position, why you’re interested, and why you would be a good person for the job! T-shirts and Dues: A. We are looking for a t-shirt design, so if you feel like being creative let us know! B. Dues to be a PHR member are $10. - Pay Neelima or Rachel Sosland - There will be a discount on t-shirts for members! CareLink Info Session: A. CareLink is a financial assistance program for low income Bexar County residents allowing them to receive healthcare through the UHS system B. Refugees are eligible – but lots of barriers to signing up and seeing physicians! We need to learn more about how it works! C. Monday September 12th - noon to 1pm D. Location TBA E. Human Trafficking in Houston 4. FGM – balanced discussion/panel 5. Documentary about Colonias and/or have Victor from STEER speak (partner with Frontera) – need to do this in the Fall because Victor is one of the speakers for the Human Rights Elective in the Spring 6. Find 1st year student to volunteer to tutor family Health and Human Rights Elective – in the Spring San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic (SARHC) A. Patient follow up 1. Rachel S helped a patient schedule a follow up appointment and accompanied them to the clinic, which was a great experience, but unrealistic to continue due to time constraints. 2. For future clinics: when people sign up to volunteer, have at least two sign up for to do patient follow up (medical student with pair up with nursing student to do the following): - Make sure they know how to take their mediation, etc - Help schedule referral appointments - Call to remind patient to go to their appointment - Call after the referral appointment to see if they need anything else B. PA Student involvement – Bryan Robinson is a 2nd year PA student who is recruiting PA students to use SARHC as part of their community medicine project. C. Education - (Nina and Bryan) 1. Set of documents in patients language (Nepali, Arabic, Swahili) to explain illness and treatment; also think about using pictures or DVDs 2. Have spreadsheet with list of chief complaints 3. Website: Create a simple website with links for Carelink, clinic info, basic health info, etc – Bryan 4. Sex education – high rates of teen pregnancy among refugees - Big Decisions? - Cultural sensitivity - Catholic Charities’ view on sex ed? - Free/inexpensive contraceptives? 5. ESL/Tutoring – partner with Center for Refugees Service - Recruit medical students to volunteer to tutor or help with ESL classes - Advertise SARHC at CRS - Connect SARHC patients to CRS classes D.Research Project (with nursing students) 1. Chart review: demographics, chief complaints, etc 2. Rachel S, Rachel M, Neelima E. Suggestions: 1. Triage patients that are already seeing another physician or cannot be helped 2. Provide medical translation training to translators F. To do: 1. Hand out flyers at Dove Tree Apartments tomorrow after 3pm – pick them up from Jodi (Jessica will Print) 2. Mon. Feb 28 Dr. Tom McNish, former POW 6.5 years in Vietnam A 1964 graduate of the Air Force Academy, Vietnam Veteran Tom McNish, was piloting an F-105 Thunderchief when he was shot down near Hanoi in September 1966. He stayed in captivity for six-and-a-half years at the “Hanoi Hilton” until his release on March 4, 1973. After his release, McNish started a new career path entering Medical School in 1974. After completing residencies in both Family Practice and Aerospace Medicine, he returned to the Air Force as a flight surgeon. After retiring from the Air Force, McNish now lives in San Antonio.
