PHR Mission StatementPhysicians for Human Rights mobilizes health professionals to advance health, dignity and justice, and promotes the right to health for all. Harnessing the specialized skills, rigor, and passion of doctors, nurses, public health specialists and scientists, PHR investigates human rights abuses and works to stop them.
PHR is based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights written in 1948 addressing the global expression of rights to which all human beings are entitled. Visit the National PHR organization website. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR): Read the UDHR (pdf) "The Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948, a date commemorated annually as Human Rights Day. The Declaration was, in large part, a response to the events of World War II. Drafted by a committee chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt, it is considered to be a part of international customary law and is designed to be legally enforceable. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (both of which were adopted in 1966) serve as the International Bill of Human Rights." - PHR handout |
